ACTIVITIES
Tonga Airports Limited is part of the Transport group of SOEs and its board is shared with Friendly Islands Shipping Services and Ports Authority Tonga.
Tonga Airports Limited was formed in 2007 to take over the operation of the airports within the Kingdom of Tonga, with the main airport being Fua’amotu on Tongatapu, the main international airport and domestic feeder. TAL also operates five other airports: Lupepau’u International Airport on Vava’u, Salote Pilolevu Airport on Ha’apai, Kaufana Airport on ‘Eua, Lavinia Airport on Niuatoputapu and Mata’aho Airport. Lupepau’u Airport’s international operations mainly service flights to and from Fiji.
The company describes its main purpose to provide a safe, secure and competitive civil aviation environment that encourages airlines to service Tonga in increasing numbers; to provide a pleasurable and efficient customer experience that is identifiably Tongan and that encourages growth in passenger numbers; to build the company’s commercial business that meets the needs of the customer; and to operate profitably to allow ongoing reinvestment and to pay the shareholder a dividend.
While there is competition on the international routes, domestic air travel is served by just one carrier.
The company operates under delegated authority from the Minister of Transport and the Ministry of Transport provides operational and safety regulatory oversight.
