ACTIVITIES
Tonga Cable Limited (TCL) owns and manages the fibre-optic submarine cable, connecting Tonga to Fiji, which was commissioned in August 2013. The cable cost was around T$36 million and was financed through grants from the World Bank Group and the Asian Development Bank. The cable had and immediate positive impact on internet services in Tonga – internet capacity was increased by a factor of 5; the wholesale price per megabit was reduced by 83%; and latency was reduced by at least 96%.

TCL is the only provider of fibre-optic services in Tonga. Prior to laying the cable, Tonga was reliant on satellite internet connections. TCL is currently looking at options to connect the Ha’apai and Vava’u groups to the cable: the SOE’s ability to achieve this is reliant on donor funding.

TCL has been able to maintain 99.99% availability on the cable during 2016 and there is significant opportunity to expand its use with less than 10% capacity utilization.
