Activities

Tonga Broadcasting Commission is part of the ICT group and its board of directors are shared with Tonga Communications Corporation and Tonga Post and Fast Print Limited. Directors were originally appointed for a one-year term.

Tonga Broadcasting Commission (TBC) was established under the Tonga Broadcasting Act 1988. TBC provides AM and FM radio and one local TV stations, all free to air. It also serves as the local agent for Sky Pacific, which is a paid TV service. TBC also retails electronic equipment such as transistor radios, music CDs and local DVDs.

The powers and duties of the Commission are set out in Part III of the Tongan Broadcasting Commission Act. The duties of the Commission are to set up, commence and maintain a broadcasting service as a means of information, education and entertainment and to develop the service to the best advantage and interests of the Kingdom. The Act also allows for the Minister responsible for Communications to require TBC to broadcast any program that the Minister may from time determine.

The Tonga Communications Corporation Act 2000 establishes the regulatory and licensing regime under which TBC operates. TBC is required to have an individual license under Section 16 of the Communications Act and failure to hold the proper license exposes directors and managers to a fine not exceeding $15,000 or a term of imprisonment not exceeding 6 months or both.
